Hannah Collins. The Fragile Feast

Collins, Hannah (2011)

L amour fou: Picasso and Marie Therese
Picasso, Pablo; Richardson, John

Pablo Picasso's endless fascination with his lover's character and form led to radical shifts in his conception of portraiture and the mystical metamorphoses that the act of creation entails. Picasso's secretive love affair with Marie-Therese Walter, which began in 1927, inspired a radical shift in his conception of portraiture. The exhibition and catalogue present Marie-Therese as a primary vehicle for his experimentation during the period, including several works never before seen in the United States as well as previously unpublished personal letters and photographs. Picasso and Marie-Therese sheds new light on the interpretation of one of the most creative relationships in Picasso's rich and varied oeuvre.

Architecture and design
Contemporary Architecture in China "Buildings and Projects 2000-2020"
Dubrau, Christian

Set apart from China's globally criticised stance on the issues of climate protection, Internet censorship, and human rights, over the last ten years China's economic centres have developed into genuine architectural destinations. Initially earning only a tired smile from the architects of the industrial nations and accused of plagiarism, breathtaking buildings have risen out of the ground in Beijing, Shanghai, and elsewhere. In many other megacities, which are virtually unknown to Europeans, buildings also bear witness to the country's advancing modernisation. Extravagant high-rises, gigantic airports or extraordinary stadiums have already earned a place in the chronicle of 21st century architecture. Like the country's internationally-recognised stars, Chinese architects are now also emancipating themselves from the anonymous mass of state-run project institutes and university planning offices.

Photography
Boris Mikhailov. The Wedding
Mikhailov, Boris

Challenging and provocative, Mikhailov's photographs document human casualties living in post communist Eastern Europe after the demise of the Soviet Union. They are unflinching and ruthless depictions of poverty and the homeless (also known as Bomzhes) living in the margins of Russia's new economic regime without social support or care. This series presents a simulated wedding between two homeless people often naked and in sexual poses, set amongst their own surroundings.
Mikhailov's photographs, often presented in these wry even humorous situations, only add to the absurdity of this tragic life. The onlooker experiences feelings of empathy and disgust as they guiltily absorb the content of these engaging yet horrifying pictures, peering into an unknown world of madness, destitution, longing and death in an un-redemptive portrait of outcast humanity.

"The Wedding" is bound in imitation of a traditional wedding album, with faux-leather and gold-debossed lettering designed by calligrapher John Stevens. It is further finished off with a text by Adrian Searle.

Opening Night
Cassavetes,John
